Octophonics Student Books

The four Octophonics Student Books are designed as a complete set, intended to be used together as one cohesive curriculum. To fully master English phonics, students are expected to complete all four books. The program is primarily designed for students in Grades 1 to 3 and is meant to be taught over the course of two years. The decision to divide the curriculum into four separate books was made to help teachers deliver the content more easily across four academic semesters.

Book 1 (Units 1-3)

The first student book includes Units 1 through 3 and is designed to build a strong foundation in phonics while helping students correct any existing pronunciation habits.

  • Unit 1 introduces all short vowel sounds and single consonants, while also teaching the core Three-Steps Method that will be used throughout the entire program.

  • Unit 2 is based on word families, reinforcing the content learned in Unit 1 while introducing patterns that help students recognize spelling and sound relationships.

  • Unit 3 begins teaching basic long vowel patterns, as well as simple consonant blends and digraphs.

Together, these three units provide a structured and efficient way to guide students through the foundational stages of phonics. In one semester, learners develop essential decoding skills and begin to understand how letter combinations form sounds in a systematic and meaningful way.

Book 2 (Units 4-8)

Book 2 covers the largest portion of the curriculum, including Units 4 through 8. During this phase, students experience rapid progress in their pronunciation skills as they learn most of the essential vowel and consonant combinations used in English.

  • Unit 4 reviews key content from Unit 3 through word families, helping students ease into the new semester with familiar patterns.

  • Unit 5 introduces students to basic vowel digraphs and teaches them common rules for vowel combinations.

  • Unit 6 uses word families to reinforce the vowel digraphs introduced in Unit 5.

  • Unit 7 expands on this by introducing more advanced and varied vowel combinations.

  • Unit 8 reviews Unit 7 content through additional word family practice.

Although Book 2 contains more units than the others, much of the material builds on sounds students have already encountered. As a result, the book feels manageable and allows students to deepen their understanding of vowel combinations through repetition, pattern recognition, and guided practice.

Book 3 (Unit 9 and Intro to 10)

Book 3 marks a major milestone in the Octophonics program. It includes Unit 9 and the beginning of Unit 10, bringing students to full phonemic mastery and preparing them for real-world reading challenges.

  • Unit 9 covers all remaining vowel and consonant sounds in English, including the more complex or easily confused patterns. By the end of this unit, students will be able to accurately pronounce every English phoneme and confidently decode all major vowel and consonant combinations.

  • Unit 10 introduces one of Octophonics’ most powerful innovations—our unique system of word endings. These ending combinations help students quickly recognize and read longer, more complex words by focusing on recurring syllable patterns commonly found in English.

Book 3 not only completes all traditional phonics instruction, but also bridges the gap between phonics knowledge and real-life reading. With the introduction of word endings, students begin to apply their decoding skills to academic vocabulary, daily reading, and independent learning with greater fluency and confidence.

Book 4 (Unit 10 cont. and 11)

Book 4 brings the Octophonics journey to completion, solidifying students’ phonics skills and preparing them for real academic success.

  • Unit 10 continues with the remaining word endings, helping students internalize advanced syllable patterns and recognize complex word structures. By the end of this unit, students can confidently read any English word with phonetic markings.

  • Unit 11 introduces students to subject-specific vocabulary organized by academic themes such as math, music, science, and more. These carefully selected words prepare students for the terminology they will encounter across various subjects in the coming years.

Students who complete Book 4 become true Phonics Masters. They are not only able to decode any phonetically marked word with ease, but also demonstrate significantly stronger comprehension and confidence compared to peers who have not received structured phonics training. This final book transforms phonics from a foundational skill into a powerful academic tool for lifelong learning.
